Little Yellow Measure

This is where The Human Measure began — long before the section had a name, before the Protagoras line anchored it. Just a handful of tiny yellow-clad figures on an observation platform, dwarfed by the falls.

It used to live in my notes as Маленькие человечки — little yellow people, little yellow staffage. The thought stuck with me for years: that the measure of a thing is so often whoever happens to be standing next to it. Niagara doesn’t care how big it looks. It takes a person — small, yellow, barely visible — to tell you.
