The green has aged with the locomotive. The orange turns up again on the men who keep it moving.

This was shot on a branch of the Bologoye–Polotsk railway, a historic line still in use today. Many stations along it are partly or completely abandoned, yet some have survived almost untouched — old buildings, signs and railway artifacts left in place like accidental time capsules.

I travelled the line several times looking for exactly that. On this day, I drove from station to station, repeatedly catching up with this train and seeing it off again.

Eventually, the faded green, the old orange markings and the orange on the men all came together. The chase was worth it.
